IS LENT BORING?
Many Catholics see the time of Lent as sad, melancholic and boring. But I regret to say that those who think this way are the bored and very sad ones.
Let me explain: The Lord Jesus commands us in the Gospel (Matthew 6:16) “When you fast, do not be gloomy like the hypocrites, who disfigure their faces to make it seem to others that they are fasting. I assure you that they have received their reward.” That is, we have to show ourselves open, optimistic and awake. Only a joyful and hopeful attitude can show this.
The Gospel of Luke 4. 1-2 teaches us that the Holy Spirit accompanies us, we are not alone and we can overcome temptations. In this Lenten experience there will be no time to be bored, but to be attentive and wide awake, so as not to let ourselves be overcome by evil. Some words from Mother Teresa of Calcutta for this Lenten season. “Let us smile at the sad, timid, sick faces, acquaintances, family and friends. The Lenten season is not boring, you make it boring, because perhaps you are the boring one and you carry a lot of bitterness in your heart.
