A new year can be approached in many ways. It can be just another year; it can also be an open year to do many things; it can also be a page to be written; it can be an open window to the future.
For Christians, the years and days are not in the hands of a dark chance or an implacable destiny. For Christians, Jesus Christ is the Lord of time. He has entered, through the Incarnation, into time and time is, from then on, “the time of the Lord.” This is what we read in the various inscriptions: Year of the Lord.
This year that begins will not be the exception. Whatever happens in the course of your days, it will be a year of the Lord, a year that does not escape, as none of them do, from the gaze of God.
If for us Jesus Christ is the Lord of time, our look towards the future must necessarily be a look of hope. Hope does not consist in naively believing that everything will turn out well. Hope is trust in God; in the certainty that, whatever happens, we are in the hands of God.
A Christian should never look at the future with uncertainty. Every year that passes is a new opportunity, a new possibility. If we know how to take advantage of it, each year represents a new gift; a possibility opened by grace.
May the Lord grant us to live with this certainty and with this hope in the coming year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE ENTIRE HOLY CROSS AND GOOD SHEPHERD COMMUNITY.
