On September 29th, the Church celebrated the holy archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. These archangels, who hold a deep-rooted place throughout the Church’s tradition, should not be overlooked in today’s world. The name Michael (Hebrew for “Who is like God?”) recalls the battle waged by this archangel and the faithful angels against Lucifer and his followers, who rebelled against God and were cast into hell. Gabriel (Hebrew for “Strength of God”) was chosen by God to announce the mystery of the Incarnation to Mary. Raphael (Hebrew for “Medicine of God”) evokes his mission as a healer and a traveling companion to young Tobiah.
